Prof. Dr.
Prof. Dr. Rıfat Akbıyıklı studied Civil Engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara between 1968 and 1972. In 1975, he completed his Master’s thesis in Reinforced Concrete Structures at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and graduated as a Master Engineer.
Until 1990, he worked in Norway on the design and construction of steel structures, highways, tunnels, and bridges, as well as on the design and construction management of prestressed reinforced concrete structures. Between 1990 and 2002, he worked in Turkey as a manager at Impregilo S.p.A. on the Kınalı–Sakarya Motorway Project and at Astaldi S.p.A. on the Gümüşova–Gerede Motorway Project. In 2002, he began his academic career as a lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at Sakarya University. In 2005, he completed his PhD in Construction Management at the University of Salford, Manchester, in the United Kingdom, where he also served as a lecturer for three semesters during his doctoral studies. During his PhD, he completed his second Master’s degree in Construction Project Management at the University of Bath.
After completing his doctorate, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Sakarya University in 2006, served as Assistant Professor (Yrd. Doç. Dr.) between 2007 and 2014, and was awarded the title of Associate Professor at the same university in 2014. In December 2014, he was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Düzce University, where he became a Professor in 2019. He is currently working as a full-time professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at MEF University, Istanbul. He has numerous nationally and internationally published articles and conference papers, as well as three books (with second and third editions published) and book chapters.
