The objectives of the center are inspired by the number 5.0 in its name, reflecting the total number of states that Istanbul has served throughout history, including the Roman, Byzantine, Latin, Ottoman, and Turkish Republic states. The center draws strength and experience from the past to shape the future and prepare Istanbul for the next stage of what is known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0. It aims to conduct scientific research on what needs to be done starting today to design the future Istanbul, which is expected to offer its residents a sustainable and high-level future. The center will carry out these research activities in coordination with relevant government agencies, private sector representatives, and civil society organizations, share the research results with the public, and develop strategies for their implementation.
The center will focus its activities on five main axes to prepare Istanbul for the future:
Smart Cities in Settlement, Housing, and Environment: Creating a safer and more livable city, considering the risk of earthquakes and the cultural and historical heritage, within the concept of environmentally conscious, smart, and innovative cities.
Smart Cities in Transportation: Developing projects and solutions related to the smart transportation systems and strategies of the future that meet the needs of the entire urban population.
Smart Cities in Health and Security: Developing projects and solutions to make cities safer through the use of technological innovations.
Smart Cities in Education and Employment: Developing strategies and projects to increase employment capacity and address employment issues by equipping urban residents with different competencies in the new sectors emerging with the formation of smart cities. This includes a focus on designing and implementing widespread educational activities using Information and Communication Technologies.
Smart Cities in Culture, Arts, and Science: Ensuring that Istanbul becomes the starting point for projects that will lead Turkey's cultural and artistic initiatives and developing projects to establish mechanisms that bring together science centers, innovation centers, and technoparks in Istanbul to create synergy. Additionally, developing projects for the establishment of a comprehensive science and history museum that will be associated with Turkey and Istanbul.
In addition to these main axes, the center aims to:
Ensure the sustainability of all goals around the smart city concept.
Collaborate with national and international public or private institutions and organizations.
Organize joint initiatives and prepare and implement research and application projects.
Engage in discussions of research results through national and international conferences, symposia, workshops, and seminars, as well as disseminate them to the public through educational programs and publications.
Develop policies and strategies that involve all stakeholders in the city's transformation processes, with a focus on participation, design, and implementation.
These activities aim to contribute to the development of Istanbul as a smart city, taking into account various aspects of urban life and the well-being of its residents.
